My Experience

Marhaban / مرحبًا There’s one place I’ve dreamed of visiting since I was a young girl, and words can barely capture the overwhelming awe I felt standing before the pyramids for the first time. It was a moment of pure magic—a lifelong dream turned reality. Coming fresh from a journey around the Middle East, I was beyond excited to immerse myself in Egypt’s vibrant culture, savor its unique cuisine, and delve into the extraordinary history that makes this destination so captivating.

To make this adventure even more enriching, I joined a guided tour. It was the perfect way to deepen my understanding of Egypt’s incredible past while also connecting with like-minded travellers. The shared stories, laughter, and new friendships I formed turned this trip into something unforgettable—an experience far richer than I could have imagined.

For all the solo travellers out there, Egypt is a place where adventure, learning, and connection collide. Whether you’re exploring ancient ruins, tasting flavours you’ll never forget, or swapping stories with fellow wanderers, this destination is sure to spark your wanderlust. Let me share my top recommendations to inspire you to take that leap into the travel world.

My journey began in the vibrant city of Cairo, the beating heart of ancient wonders. Known as "The City of a Thousand Minarets" because of its breathtaking Islamic architecture and countless mosques, Cairo truly lived up to its reputation. From the moment I arrived, I was immersed in an endless flow of fascinating history, unique landmarks, and captivating stories that kept unfolding as I explored the city.

Must-See Places

Pyramids and The Sphinx

No trip to Cairo is complete without immersing yourself in Egypt’s most iconic Ancient Wonder of the World—the Pyramids and the Sphinx! This is the moment you’ve been dreaming of—standing before the mighty Great Pyramid, feeling the weight of thousands of years of history surrounding you. That’s exactly how I felt when we arrived, and honestly, I was left speechless. It was a surreal, once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I felt incredibly fortunate to be there, soaking in every second while exploring the pyramid complex. We had the option to go inside and explore, but for me, it felt more meaningful to stay outside, where the true majesty of the pyramids could be appreciated. Plus, I didn’t want to spend half an hour waiting in line when there was so much more to see and explore around these ancient wonders. Having the opportunity to admire the Great Sphinx of Giza while a knowledgeable guide shares its fascinating history and stories was truly unforgettable. If you have the time, you can also enjoy a camel ride as part of the tour, offering a unique way to experience the pyramids.

Aswan

Next on the itinerary is a visit to Aswan. You have two options for getting there, depending on your preferences and travel style: the train or the plane. For a unique and memorable experience, I opted for the overnight train, and let me tell you—it was definitely an adventure. The overnight train from Cairo to Aswan is a practical, budget-friendly choice, though it’s not the most luxurious. It’s perfect for those looking for an affordable way to cover the distance while immersing themselves in a bit of local travel culture. With the right mindset, it can become a fun and authentic part of your Egyptian experience.

Abu Simbel

Arriving in Aswan was an exciting adventure for me, especially because I was eager to see the famous ‘Abu Simbel’. If you're not familiar with it, let me take you on a journey through some incredible history. Abu Simbel is famous for its huge temples built by Pharaoh Ramses II, featuring four giant statues of him at the entrance. The site also made history when it was relocated in the 1960s to save it from being submerged by the Aswan High Dam. And here’s a fun fact: twice a year, the sun perfectly aligns and shines directly on the statues inside the temple, showcasing the brilliance of ancient Egyptian engineering. Trust me, if you haven’t been yet, you’re missing out on some breathtaking views! A few tips if you decide to visit Abu Simbel – arrive early (which is likely if you’re on a guided tour), bring plenty of water and snacks since it’s usually very hot, and make sure to take some time to admire the incredible statues up close.

Valley of the Kings

The final stop of my adventure in Egypt was visiting the Valley of the Kings, an awe-inspiring ancient burial site near Luxor. This iconic location is a must-see, attracting visitors from all over the world to explore its rich history and stunning tombs. Home to Pharaohs like Tutankhamun, Ramses II, and Seti I, the valley boasts over 60 tombs, each filled with intricate art and treasures. Be sure to take your time exploring this Egyptian wonder and immerse yourself in its history. Don’t forget to wear comfortable walking shoes for this adventure and take a guided tour to get the most out of the experience!

Unforgettable Moments

Cairo River Cruise

First off - get ready for an unforgettable evening in Cairo—because a night cruise on the Nile River is an absolute must! Imagine drifting along the legendary Nile, indulging in an amazing dinner buffet while being mesmerized by dazzling live performances from folkloric and belly dancers. The energy is electric, the atmosphere magical, and the views of Cairo’s glittering skyline are simply breathtaking from the ship’s top deck. This is more than just a cruise—it’s a vibrant celebration of culture, flavour, and connection. Perfect for making new friends or diving headfirst into the local scene, it’s a night you’ll be talking about long after the trip ends. Starting at just £20 (GBP) per person, this 3-hour adventure even includes convenient hotel pickup and drop-off from Downtown Cairo.

Felucca Sailboat

One of the highlights of my trip was spending two nights aboard a Felucca sailboat, drifting along the Nile River. This traditional wooden boat offers a unique experience, allowing you to enjoy breathtaking views of ancient landmarks while sailing at a leisurely pace. Spending the night on a Felucca boat offers a simple and serene experience. You’ll sleep on mats or cushions on the deck, under the stars, with the gentle rocking of the boat lulling you to sleep. The boat is shared with other passengers, and while the accommodations are basic, it’s an unforgettable way to connect with nature and enjoy the tranquillity of the Nile. The only way to experience this authentic adventure is through a tour, and for me, booking everything through one company made the entire trip hassle-free, from the sites to the accommodations. If this sounds like your kind of experience, don't hesitate to book and get ready for an unforgettable journey. If the Felucca sailboat isn't quite your style, another great option is a Nile cruise. A Nile cruise offers a relaxing and scenic way to explore Egypt, with beautiful views of the river and access to some of Egypt’s most iconic ancient sites, such as the Valley of the Kings and temples in Luxor and Aswan. With comfortable accommodations, meals, and guided tours included, a Nile cruise provides a more luxurious way to experience Egypt’s wonders.

Experiences

Be sure to visit both the Unfinished Obelisk and the Philae Temple. The Unfinished Obelisk, located in the northern quarries, offers a fascinating look at ancient stone-carving techniques, showcasing a massive obelisk that was abandoned due to cracks in the granite. Meanwhile, Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis, is known for its stunning architecture and intricate carvings. It was a truly beautiful experience to explore the complex, learn about its rich history, and fully embrace in the moment. Both sites are incredible glimpses into Egypt’s ancient history and craftsmanship.
