My Experience

I am filled with excitement to be able to finally travel to this wonderful country, as it holds a special place in my heart due to my family heritage. With my grandparents being Dutch, it feels like a true honour to be able to discover the place where my family comes from. Not to mention, I am looking forward to savouring the delicious dishes that remind me of my childhood, evoking wonderful memories.

I've been lucky enough to explore Amsterdam twice since moving over to London in 2019. The first time was only for 1 night, but I knew right away that I would be back. Luckily, in 2024, I got to revisit this magical place and fully indulge in the stunning wonders of Amsterdam.

In Amsterdam, there's something for everyone, whether you're passionate about art, fascinated by history, or simply want to soak in the charm of its canals and lively neighbourhoods. With its bike-friendly layout and excellent public transportation system, getting around is a breeze, even for first-time visitors. From its rich cultural heritage to its picturesque scenery and vibrant districts, Amsterdam offers an enchanting experience for every type of traveller.

Must-See Places

Albert Cuyp Market

Albert Cuyp market is a foodie paradise with a wide variety of local delicacies to try. One of my personal favourites is the 'Poffertjes' which are fluffy mini pancakes that are cooked right in front of your eyes and topped with your favourite sauces. They strike the perfect balance between sweet and savoury and at just €4.50 for 10 pieces, they are a steal! Great for breakfast or snacking while exploring. Try multiple food vendors to get the full experience.

Van Stapele Koekmakerij

After exploring the incredible market, don't miss out on the opportunity to taste the most delicious cookie in Amsterdam. At Van Stapele Koekmakerij, you will witness the cookies being freshly baked right before your eyes. Make sure to add this gem to your list, as you will definitely regret it if you miss out. Be prepared for a bit of a wait and a long line as it is a popular place but it is worth the wait. In fact, I couldn't resist going back the very next day for another cookie fix because they are simply amazing! Single cookie €3.00 or box of 6 for €15.00. Expect queues but it's absolutely worth the wait!

Keukenhof Gardens

Don't miss out on the chance to witness something truly amazing if you find yourself in the area during April or May time. Every year, an astonishing 7 million bulbs are planted throughout the park's expansive 79 acres. The garden's carefully designed floral displays draw in over a million visitors from around the world during its short two-month opening period, creating a truly spectacular and eagerly awaited event in the world of horticulture. Book tickets ahead of time. Aim for early arrival (9am or 10am) to avoid crowds and get the best photo opportunities. Check the weather forecast if possible.

Anne Frank House

I highly suggest visiting the Anne Frank House if you have an interest in history. This experience offers a captivating journey back to World War II and allows you the chance to step into the house where Anne Frank hid for just over two years. It is definitely something you shouldn't miss out on. Plan to spend around 2-3 hours there, immersing yourself in her story and the renowned history of World War II. Book tickets in advance - they're released 6 weeks prior to your visit date and sell out quickly. Tickets are priced at €16.00 and include an audio guide.

Unforgettable Moments

Walking Tour of Amsterdam

During my travels, I always make the effort to go on a walking tour to learn more about the city I am visiting. Luckily for me, I had my own personal tour guide in the form of a good friend who lives there. She took me to some amazing places including the Red Light District which offers a truly unique experience, Kop Zeedijk which is one of the oldest parts of Amsterdam, the square of the national monument op de dam, and the old trams of Amsterdam. If you have extra time, don't forget the Rijksmuseum as well.

Food Tour

If you're in the mood for something more savory, Greg Monsieur is the place to go for the best toasties in Amsterdam. With a selection of fillings to choose from, you can customise your sandwich to your liking. Prices vary depending on your choice of fillings but can start from €3.50 up to €6.75.

Heertje Friet - Best Fries

The last food recommendation is the fries at Heertje Friet. While there are plenty of places to get fries in Amsterdam, this one truly stands out from the rest. Personally, I am not a big fan of fries, but these were something else. Freshly cooked and topped with your sauce of choice, they were incredibly delicious. Be sure to make a pit stop for these tasty fries on your travels around Amsterdam.
