Land of breathtaking fjords, midnight sun, and Viking history.
I’m beyond excited to announce that Norway has officially become my first Scandinavian adventure, and wow, what a way to start! In just four days, I was swept away by the country's breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and unforgettable experiences. But here's the thing – I only scratched the surface! I explored in winter, and now I’m itching to return and see what magic Norway holds in the summer time. So, let me take you on a journey to show you why this mesmerising country should be at the top of your bucket list – trust me, you’ll want to pack your bags right away.
Starting your trip in Oslo is highly recommended because it offers a perfect introduction to Norway, blending rich history, vibrant culture, and modern Scandinavian design. The capital serves as a gateway to understanding the country’s identity, making it an ideal first stop. However, it’s important to note that dining out in Oslo can be more expensive than in many other European destinations. While enjoying the city’s culinary delights is a wonderful experience, being prepared for the higher costs can help ensure your meals are relaxing and free of surprises when it’s time to pay.
Moving north of Norway and taking a flight up to Tromso was an exciting adventure as this was a chance to experience the ‘once in a life-time’ Northern Lights. I mean this was not the only reason I wanted to head up to Tromso but it is known as one of the best spots in the world to see the lights so I guess I could not miss this opportunity.
A trip to Oslo wouldn't be truly complete without a visit to the famous Holmenkollen Ski Jump, one of Norway's most exciting attractions. Standing tall above the city, this stunning structure showcases Norway's rich heritage in winter sports. You'll not only be impressed by its remarkable architecture, but you'll also enjoy stunning panoramic views of Oslo and the surrounding fjord from the summit. Easy to reach from the city with a direct train ride followed by a short 10-minute walk from Holmenkollen station. Features over 4,000 years of skiing history.
Another highlight recommended during the 'free walking tour' of Oslo. This is a must-see for anyone who appreciates art and the beauty of nature. Located just 10-15 minutes from the city centre by public transport, or a leisurely 30-minute walk from the heart of Oslo, this remarkable sculpture park features over 200 stunning works by the renowned artist Gustav Vigeland. The park beautifully captures the complexity of human emotions and relationships. Free entry. Take time to truly immerse yourself in the artistry and natural surroundings.
If you're looking for a fun and mind-bending experience in Oslo, don't miss a visit to the Paradox Museum. This interactive museum is designed to trick your mind with over 70 paradox-based exhibits that challenge your perceptions of reality. Each exhibit is cleverly crafted to puzzle and delight, offering a unique experience that's both entertaining and thought-provoking. Usually takes around an hour to explore. Tickets approximately €23 per person. The staff are exceptionally friendly with vibrant energy!
Hop on the Fjellheisen cable car for stunning views of Tromsø. Located just 15 minutes from the city centre, the cable car takes only 4-5 minutes to reach the top, rewarding you with breathtaking panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscapes. It's a great spot to relax, take in the scenery, and for those eager to explore more, you can continue hiking further up the mountain. Consider hiking back down in suitable weather. Great views in both summer and winter.
Dog sledding in Tromsø is an unforgettable adventure that offers a unique and exhilarating way to experience the stunning Arctic wilderness. Imagine gliding through pristine snow-covered landscapes, surrounded by towering mountains and vast frozen fjords, while a team of enthusiastic huskies pulls your sled. The thrill of racing through the Arctic silence, with only the sound of the sled and the dogs' paws in the snow, is absolutely magical.
Book here →The much-anticipated Northern Lights experience, a magical adventure that many rave about. Everything depends on the weather - if conditions aren't ideal, you might search for hours. My trip required crossing into Finland for viewing. The overall experience includes campfires and marshmallows while waiting. Note: the vibrant colours are often captured better by camera than visible to the naked eye.
Book here →A great way to explore Oslo and discover highlights like Vigeland Park. Tours typically cover the main attractions while sharing local insights and history.
Looking for a unique experience? Why not try Pust Sauna, a truly one-of-a-kind adventure in Tromsø. This floating sauna sits on the waterfront, surrounded by breathtaking views of fjords and mountains. The sauna is known for its striking and glowing design which is perfect for a magical evening. The highlight? Taking a plunge into the icy Norwegian waters before dashing back into the warm sauna. A sensory delight that will leave a lasting impression. Perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.
