My Experience

I understand that many New Zealanders may find it amusing, but I can’t help recommending the largest city in the country. Trust me, it has an abundance of attractions and experiences to offer; it is impossible for me to list all of them when you are likely to only be spending 2-3 days here. Make sure to pack some layers of clothing. The weather can be unpredictable, potentially experiencing four seasons in a single day depending on the time of the year you go. It is best to take a light jacket or an umbrella when you are out and about exploring the city.

Must-See Places

Sky City Orbit 360

Auckland is a paradise for food enthusiasts, with an array of cuisines that will leave you wanting more. Whether you are craving traditional local foods or international flavours, this city has it all. It is never easy for me to suggest specific restaurants in a city I have called home for 8 years, but there is one dining experience that stands out from the rest. The ‘Sky City Orbit 360’ restaurant is an absolutely unique experience which provides you sensational views of the city. If you are fortunate to visit on a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of Great Barrier Island or Waitakere Ranges in the distance. In regards to pricing, you can dine for lunch (2 course) for approximately $75 (NZD) per person and dinner (3 course) for approximately $109-$120 (NZD) per person depending on the day you book.

Beaches

When it comes to your travel plans, don’t overlook Auckland ‘beaches’, especially when the summer vibes are in full swing. It is worth noting that these beaches are scattered throughout the city and its surrounding areas, so planning ahead is critical when travelling. Some of the most picturesque and popular beaches include Piha, which is 55km away from the city (1 hour by car) , Takapuna Beach and Mission Bay which are both only 10km from the city (20 minutes by car), and Maraetai Beach which is 40km from the city (50 minutes by car). In the summer, kiwis enjoy heading to the beach, enjoying some fish n chips, playing backyard cricket and having a delicious ice cream, whether it’s the classic Hokey Pokey or the delightful Goody Goody Gum Drops flavour.

Hiking

If you are seeking a good adventure, Auckland has plenty to offer. This vibrant city offers a selection of thrilling experiences, with hiking being one of the top choices. The circular trail of Mount Eden (Maungawhau) offers breath-taking views of the city and is conveniently situated within the city, making it easily accessible for numerous tourists. This particular route is generally considered an easy hike spanning around 2km and is accessible all year round. For a more challenging hike, look no further than Rangitoto Island summit. This dormant volcano promises magnificent views of the Hauraki Gulf and is conveniently located, just a 25 minute ferry ride away from downtown Auckland. Remember, once you arrive at the island, you’ll have to walk 5.5km to reach the summit which could take you up to 2 hours so plan your day accordingly. This hike really provides you the opportunity to conquer new heights and immerse yourself in the beauty of the islands volcanic landscape.

Harbour Bridge

If you prefer water activities or thrill-seeking adventures, there are plenty of choices to satisfy your need for an adrenaline rush. One of my top recommendations is Auckland Bridge Bungy (bridge jumping off the harbour bridge). It is an exhilarating adventure that allows adrenaline junkies to leap off the 40m high bridge and even have a quick dip in the ocean. The cost is approximately $210 (NZD) per person and the whole experience including preparation and safety briefings takes about 2 hours.

Unforgettable Moments

Pies

Another food recommendation that you absolutely cannot afford to miss, no matter where you are in the country, is the mouth-watering ‘Mince and Cheese Pie’. To find these extraordinary pies, look no further than your local corner shops or what we fondly refer to as ‘dairies’. Make sure to include this delectable treat on your list of culinary adventures.

Jet Boating

Not a fan of heights? Why not try something equally exciting on the sea. Jet Boating in Waitemata Harbour will definitely get your heart pumping with excitement. Living in Auckland, this adventure was an absolute standout for me. It was a thrilling 40-minute experience that involved on-water tricks, passing iconic landmarks and reaching speeds of up to 100kph.
