My Experience

This is one of the locations that I think is underrated and needs more promotion. It is one of those places that definitely requires a car to travel to and you are expected to drive 2-3 hours from Auckland to arrive at the very top of New Zealand. This particular destination is often overlooked and deserves greater recognition both within New Zealand and internationally. This place is a true hidden gem, filled with unique charm and countless unexplored spots. It takes approximately 1.5 hours to drive from Kaitaia to Cape Reinga but if you prefer a more leisurely experience, guided tours are available for you to sit back and enjoy.

Must-See Places

Cape Reinga Lighthouse

The pinnacle of tranquillity can be found at the highest point of New Zealand. Cape Reinga Lighthouse is a truly remarkable location and holds immense importance as one of the most sacred and spirituality significant locations in New Zealand. According to Maori mythology, this is where the departed souls embark on their journey to the underworld. This place known as the northernmost accessible part of New Zealand holds great importance in their beliefs. A solitary pohutukawa tree stands there as a symbol of reverence, adorned with heartfelt offerings like ribbons and flowers serving as a tribute to the spirits of the departed. The lighthouse itself is also a remarkable structure, boasting its unique red and white stripes to the world. It rises to an impressive height of 165 meters above sea level and serves as a guiding beacon for ships. The area around Cape Reinga Lighthouse is absolutely stunning, offering breath-taking views of the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean colliding. This unique location serves as the convergence point for two significant bodies of water and create a dramatic whirlpool known as the ‘Meeting of the Waters’.

Ninety Mile Beach

Exploring the captivating surroundings of Cape Reinga is an absolute must-do if you have the luxury of time. Ninety Mile Beach is an awe-inspiring stretch of coastline situated on the west coast of the North Island. This beach despite its name, is only 55 miles in length but remains one of the world’s longest and most stunning beaches. Did you know this beach is not just any ordinary beach? It’s actually an official public highway. However, don’t be fooled by its title as this unique highway is only suitable for 4WD vehicles and can only be driven on during specific times of the tides. So if you’re up for an adventurous ride, make sure you have the right wheels and plan your journey accordingly.

Exploring

Travelling to the northernmost part of New Zealand takes you on many rural roads, but with a little guidance, you can discover numerous eateries in the far north that you cannot miss out on. If you’re looking to try a one-of-a-kind pie that can’t be found anywhere else in the world, make sure to try the paua pie. There are a few different café that sell these unique pies – Houhora Honey Bees, Container Café or Wild Nekta Café and Bakehouse. All these places are situated in the Northland region so make sure to take a quick break at any of these fantastic spots while making your journey to the top!

Unforgettable Moments

Sandboarding

If you have the fortune of embarking on a guided tour, you will discover that the beach is embraced by majestic sand dunes. This is an ideal setting for sandboarding adventures or simply taking in the incredible views. Depending on the tour you select, you’ll have the opportunity to make a stop at Te Paki Sand Dunes to create memories of a lifetime. Keep in mind that the dunes require a hike uphill of approximately 100m. But as I often say, seize the opportunity and don’t hesitate to embark on new adventures. Remember you only live once!

Local Foods

If you are someone who loves exploring authentic culinary foods, then you definitely shouldn’t overlook one of the finest traditional dishes that New Zealand has to offer. The Hangi, a traditional Maori feast cooked in an underground oven, is definitely a dish and experience that you must try. This slow-cooked meal combines meat, vegetables and seafood creating a delightful blend of flavours that will captivate your taste buds
